Project Sunrise
This guide will walk you through downloading and setting up Project Sunrise. You don't need any technical experience to follow it. Just follow the steps in order.
!! IMPORTANT !! This guide is written for Windows. If you're using another operating system, the steps may be different.
What you'll need
Before you begin, you'll need:
- A Steam account that owns Destiny 2
- A Windows PC
- Enough free storage space for the downloaded files
- The Project Sunrise repository and its DLL
1. Download SteamDepotDownloader
First, download SteamDepotDownloader from its official releases page.
For Windows, download:
windows-x64.zip
Extract the ZIP
Once the download finishes:
- Open your Downloads folder.
- Find
windows-x64.zip. - Right-click it and select Extract All...
- Choose a location that's easy to find.
I recommend creating a folder specifically for Project Sunrise, for example:
C:\Project Sunrise
After extracting the ZIP, you should see a file called:
DepotDownloader.exe
2. Open the folder in Terminal
Open the folder containing DepotDownloader.exe.
Then:
- Right-click an empty area inside the folder.
- Select Open in Terminal.
A black or dark-colored window should appear.
Don't worry if the terminal looks complicated. You only need to copy and paste the commands provided in this guide.
3. Authenticate with Steam
Before downloading the files, DepotDownloader needs to authenticate with your Steam account.
Copy and paste the following command into the terminal:
.\DepotDownloader.exe -app 1085660 -username REPLACEME -remember-password
Replace REPLACEME
Replace:
REPLACEME
with your Steam username.
For example:
.\DepotDownloader.exe -app 1085660 -username MySteamUsername -remember-password
Your Steam password is not included in the command. DepotDownloader will ask for it when necessary.
Once authentication begins, make sure you signed in then cancel the command with Ctrl+C.
This step is only used to authenticate your Steam account before downloading the files.
4. Choose where to download Project Sunrise
You now need to decide where you want the Project Sunrise files to be downloaded.
Option A: Use the same folder
This is the easiest option and is recommended if you're not sure which one to choose.
The files will be downloaded into the same folder where DepotDownloader.exe is located.
Copy and paste this entire command into the terminal:
.\DepotDownloader.exe -app 1085660 -depot 1085661 -manifest 7180122903232116872 -username REPLACEME -remember-password -dir "."; .\DepotDownloader.exe -app 1085660 -depot 1085662 -manifest 2210332166360342287 -username REPLACEME -remember-password -dir "."
Remember: Replace both instances of REPLACEME with your Steam username.
Option B: Use a different folder
If you'd rather store Project Sunrise somewhere else, that's fine too.
For example, you might want to use:
E:\depots\sunrise
First, make sure that folder already exists.
Then use this command:
.\DepotDownloader.exe -app 1085660 -depot 1085661 -manifest 7180122903232116872 -username REPLACEME -remember-password -dir "E:\depots\sunrise"; .\DepotDownloader.exe -app 1085660 -depot 1085662 -manifest 2210332166360342287 -username REPLACEME -remember-password -dir "E:\depots\sunrise"
If you're using a different folder, replace:
E:\depots\sunrise
with the location you want to use.
For example:
D:\Games\Project Sunrise
would become:
-dir "D:\Games\Project Sunrise"
Important: The folder must already exist before you start the download.
5. Wait for the download to finish
DepotDownloader will now download the required files.
This may take a while, depending on your internet connection.
You can leave the terminal window open while it downloads.
When it's finished, you should have the downloaded Destiny 2 files in the folder you selected.
6. Replace the DLL
Now it's time to install the Project Sunrise DLL.
From the Project Sunrise repository, download the provided steam_api64.dll.
The DLL does not go in the top level of your download folder. Destiny 2 loads its DLLs from the bin\x64 subfolder, so open that folder first:
bin\x64
If you used DepotDownloader's default folder layout instead, the path will look like this:
1085661\24238629\bin\x64
Then:
- Copy or drag the Project Sunrise
steam_api64.dllinto thebin\x64folder. - If Windows asks whether you want to replace an existing file, choose Replace the file in the destination.
Tip: Before replacing it, rename the existing
steam_api64.dlltosteam_api64.dll.backup. That way you can undo the change later.
Note: If you ever re-run DepotDownloader, it will restore the original DLL and overwrite Project Sunrise. You'll need to repeat this step afterwards.
If the game still doesn't launch, check whether your antivirus has quarantined the DLL. The file is unsigned, so it can get flagged.
7. Launch Project Sunrise
That's it!
Launch Destiny2.exe and you should be ready to go.
Enjoy Project Sunrise! Feel free to ping me (@ottergrl.) in the Discord Server's support channel for help.
